Guidelines for the laying of cables in cable chains

The laying of cables in cable chains has to be done carefully.
In general the following points have to be considered:

  • the movement (travel distance, speed, acceleration)

  • the installation (bending radius, trained personnel, installation instructions)

  • the environmental conditions (operating temperature, humidity, UV exposure)

  • It is recommended that the cable drag chain is adapted to the cable and not vice versa. There should be a clearance between the cable and the chamber in the energy chains that is at least 15% of the cable diameter around the cable and increases with increasing travel distance. To ensure even weight distribution, it is necessary to install the heavy cables on the outside and the light cables on the inside of the chambers. The minimum bending radius of the cable should not be undercut in order to ensure a long service life. The specifications for the minimum bending radius are given as x times the cable diameter and only apply to normal temperatures (approx. +20°C). The following rule applies: "The larger the bending radius of the drag chain, the longer the life expectancy of the cable."

  • Handling and installation of cables in energy chains: The cables should be uncoiled tangentially and without twist, cut to the required length and left for at least 24 hours to relax the residual bend. If this is not possible, the cables should be installed in the bending direction. The cables must be inserted (not pulled in) parallel to each other in the energy chains and placed in the neutral zone to avoid tensile and shear forces. To prevent the cables from crossing over each other, the vertical clearance must not exceed 50% of the cable diameter. If the configuration of the drag chain permits, it is always advantageous to use one cable per chamber. A strain relief may only be fitted after a length of at least 20 x the diameter of the cable in order to ensure length compensation. The strain relief must be fitted at least at the moving end of the energy chain to prevent heavy loads on the cables. Regular inspections and maintenance work are important to maintain the functionality of the cables. If the energy chain is defective, the cables should also be replaced, as the tensile forces can be transferred to the cables. Proper storage of the products and the avoidance of twisting, e.g. due to multiple winding and unwinding of the cables, are also important to maintain the quality of the products.
